Title: The Scorch Trials (The Maze Runner #2)
Author: James Dashner
Publication Information: 2010 by Delacorte Press
The Scorch Trials is the second book of the Maze Runner Trilogy by James Dashner. We are still following Thomas and the other Gladers who managed to escape the glade and the maze in the first book. Now they face a whole new set of challenges. They are now in what is called the Scorch – pretty much what is left of the world after the “Flare” attacked the planet leaving the population either dead or infected with the flare – in which they slowly go crazy and kill each other.
Thomas and his friends now have to make it through a city and to the mountains where they will find the “Safe Haven” in which they will be cured from the flare (they were infected without knowing – it serves as a kind of motivation to make it through the trial). There are a few twists and turns along the way but ultimately they make it through the trial and we are left wondering what could possibly be in store for them next.
This book was not as enjoyable as the first one, The Maze Runner. I didn’t like the love story – usually I am all for love and romance, but here it didn’t fit.Thomas has developed feelings for Teresa, which is fine, but when she is taken away and he can no longer communicate with her he is very distraught. His heartbreak and worry for this girl takes over the story and I didn’t like that about it, all it did was make Thomas look a little bit pathetic.
Overall, it wasn’t bad, I gave it 3/5 stars on Goodreads. I will start the third one tomorrow, called The Death Cure, so will see how it goes. Stay tuned for the review. Thanks for stopping by, and happy reading!
